Modern WoW legitimately has less than 100k players and the new expansion wont move the needle. Way more people play TBC classic at the very end of its life. It took more than a decade of bad decisions for it to finally be dethroned and Blizzard doesn't have the expertise needed to reboot the game with classic as the base.

It didn't. WoW still has more players, even after losing like 80% of them. FFXIV had a small hate bump from the Blizzard controversy. But as usual, the hardcore WoW players went back. And all the streamers who were jumping on the FFXIV bandwagon moved on to the next fad game. And most people just play FFXIV the month a new expansion comes out, then move on.
