For online competitive games, the developer will patch in a downgrade update when their new game releases. This will make the old game annoying as fuck to play and incentivize people to buy the new game.

All alpha and beta tests that are open to the public are simply demos to test server loads. There will not be any meaningful changes between the alpha, beta, and final product on release day.

way back in the day there was a difference between alpha and beta, alpha the game was still rough around the edges and some stuff would actually change, and beta was just testing the servers
