It's not an adaptation of the games, but it goes about it in a weird way.
So it's not first contact with Covie's for the UNSC, but also the colonies outside the UNSC don't believe the Covie's are real.
Also Harvest hasn't been mentioned at all so that event may or may not have happened, nor has glassing been seen at all despite being the Covie's primary way of fucking a planet.
Reach still exists also so we're not late in the war but we're defs not early, there isn't a clear timeline given in-show at all as too how long the UNSC has been fighting the Covie's.
Also a crazy homeless person in Episode 2 of the show explicitly told Chief/the audience that Halo is a weapon so while the UNSC has no idea what the Covie hierarchy is hence why they didn't fuck up the Prophets then and there (and that's not getting into the Prophets being out in the open at all) every character knows that Halo is a weapon a few days after learning about it existing at all.
And they haven't even got to Halo yet.
