Like most early internet humor, demotivationals were originally relatively witty in that edgy gen x manchild way that Any Forums and something awful used to go for... but then your bland reddit-esque types got a hold of it and couldn't understand how the joke was supposed to was supposed to work, so demotivationals eventually became "explain the funny image" or went full circle and became "gee wizz" motivationals again.
