1. Play Yakuza 0.
2. Forget the rest of the series exists.
3. If you feel curious, play Yakuza Kiwami 2, then quit for good.

Cho-han is based af. I've never understood shogi though. I eventually fumbled my way to being mediocre at mahjong, it's probably my favorite Yakuza activity.

I've been playing Yakuza 7 as my first Yakuza. I really appreciate all the small bits like minigames and side stories, stuff you could completely miss. Modern games usually cut out anything that they don't railroad you into, so it really enhances the sense of exploration to have so much optional content.
