Micro transactions. The main story codec calls are free, but in order to call to the characters, you need to buy character packs to open their codec numbers, so you can have the interesting conversations with them, or just ask for advice.
Alternatively, I could see a western developer doing what they did with silent hill 2 HD remaster, when they originally wanted to re-write the story. They would likely cut out every cheesy bit of dialogue and definitely change the story bits where Liquid hints that your genes define you, since it would be problematic for... certain people.
