Just call them shooters or FPSs. It doesn't really make sense to call them "boomer shooters" when there really isn't any alternative within the realm of FPSs.

Anchoring it to an era doesn't work when modern "retro shooters" are of similar design to older games but share a lot of designs that are of this era rather than a bygone one.

You strafe into cover and then you strafe back out to then circle strafe your enemies to prevent them from hitscanning you. If using cover to avoid hitscanners was the end all be all, then stuff like Shamblers wouldn't have explosive resistance
