Even from15-20 years ago and on, I doubt most games from that point on will ever truly be regarded as good as the golden age of games where original concepts might have been established or explored; particularly if a modern game is unable to do something wholly original without going above and beyond utilizing to the full extent the modern implementation of advanced graphics and scale available in it's time. For instance, from what I can tell not a lot of things are technically mechanically original in Elden Ring for instance, but it does have scale and graphics that helps one give it appreciation of the progress in that area when we compare to older games. So, there might be a point where people say things like, "oh PS4 is retro now, it had great games", but I doubt they will be truly be regarded in the same vain as say the 90s era; maybe if a ton of time passes, but it would have to be the scale of decades where things start to blur.
Gate keeping to me means keeping out the new blood and newer crowds (the masses/normies) from changing the game and the surrounding culture to something less desirable to some within that community. One example used is like how OG player base might complain about characters that are changing or added to appeal or pander to women or minorities. Or another might be something like the preference in the way the product is sold from P2P to F2P.
