Few people know about what happens in the original Ring novels because they weren't translated. For example, no one knows that Sadoko isn't a girl. She's intersex so she's technically a hermaphrodite. Anyway here's a summary of book 1, which is whatbthe western movie was based off:

>journalist investigates and finds out that the woman in the tape is Sadako
>she was a fairly well known Psychic 30 years ago but she was outed as a fraud so she killed herself by jumping into a well
>journalist correctly realises that her soul is possessing the tape
>so he recovers Sadako's body and gives her a proper Burial, hoping that will appease her spirit
>it does not
>rapist calls the journalist, he's figured out the end of the tape
>you have to give the tape to someone else and have them watch it to free yourself of the curse - you just make Sadako target someone else
>Journalist just killed his wife, kid, and rapist best friend bybexposing them all to the tape

It creates a tumour in the victim's throat and after seven days, they will die of a heart attack, the face of horror being a side effect. The virus also contains a strand of Sadako's DNA, which can be fertilised and lead to her resurrection as seen in the second novel Spiral, along with other deceased characters.

>he's completely smitten and head over heels with Sadako
>Sadako reveals herself as the one behind the curse and has the coroner help her spread the tape all over the world to doom mankind
