Dark Portal was a lot larger in the Alpha, same as Karazhan.
For some reason they both got downsized heavily, probably due to an aesthetic reason by one of the devs. They made changes on the fly back then without asking the directors/execs. The most meddling on vanilla WoW was chris metzen telling people to change names/dialogue to be lore accurate.

Originally there was a big quest chain with warlocks (player characters) going on a quest chain to unlock it, similar to the AQ war effort. Karazhan also lead into the dark portal being reopened as it was suppose to be the tier 4 raid after Naxx.
