You need to care for the story. The tacticool gameplay and cool details are much more appreciated when they are fleshing out a story you want to hear

That depends totally on the game. MGS is heavily a story- and character-driven saga, but it has always perfectly balanced between its cinematic and video game-y sides. Unlike just about any modern AAA trash, when you're PLAYING Metal Gear, you really are playing a bona fide game, with plenty of TECHNOLOGY and tactical options.

I can tell that Metal Gear games have quality game-play and mechanics.I just usually find their starting areas a bit disorganized as they tend to throw you right into the middle of a situation. I guess I prefer the narrative to be paced more gently. Silent Hill 2 is one of my favorite games lol

Here's a fun answer no one else will give you: play the original 2 MSX games.
Obviously no cutscenes. They play very similar to the original NES Zelda, but with this 1970's/1980's operator coat of paint.
I'm assuming you've tried other games in the series and don't like them.
From playing the MSX games, if you next play Metal Gear Solid it's easy to see how MGS1 is almost exactly the same as the MSX games in terms of gameplay, but then you've got the cutscenes and production value the series starts to be known for.
If you don't like anime, you might like the MSX games, and won't click with much of the rest of the series.
Metal Gear Solid V, both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain proper are pretty good and also were an intentional effort by Kojima to go westaboo and tone down the anime aspects. Phantom Pain even makes "quiet" and letting your actions speak for you a story theme, and the "anime" aspects are cut way down from previous games.

It's not exactly mutually exclusive. My first comment was what the game expects of you as far as interpreting the events of the story and how that effects how you play and interpret the events. Slow start doesn't mean that the game is cramming exposition down your throat.

I might enjoy that. Those games have a pretty cool look and the gameplay looks pretty satisfying. I'll download the roms tomorrow

I don’t like anime and love metal gear

I like anime, and I like Metal Gear, but you've got to admit stuff like Ocelot being possessed by Liquid after receiving his hand as a transplant is pretty out there. To say nothing of the voice acting with gems like "We've managed to avoid drowing!"

Is there a mod that makes higher level key cards open lower level doors in metal gear 1? I cannot express how much I hated having to test each key card on a door until one of them worked.

Idk about any mods, but gosh I don't remember having any trouble with this. As far as I remember the progression with the key cards is pretty linear, right?

doesn't every door that uses a keycard have the number of the one it needs painted right on it?
