phones sucked at the time

it had fun video games

portable, cheap, library variety, pretty good deal all around

fpbp, the only mobile games were basic ones like tetris and snake.

Lots of games, no mobile competition. Dual-screen was a good gimmick.

better library than the psp, but that's not saying much

Because it had really good video games.

>better library than the psp
PSP had God of War and Burnout

Gud mario games

Appealed to a wide market with games like brain age

Well it was a good machine, and an affordable one.
It didn't use batteries which was a big plus.
The main thing was that it was something that parents would buy for their kids individually. So there would be multiple DS's in one household.
Where you would never see that for like an Xbox.

also this

and god awful controls

Excellent games all around and from all genres. PSP was only good for bad ports of movie games, Dissidia and MHFU in comparison.

>handicapped versions of console games
>good

and mobile games are still dogshit

Because they were the cheapest console you could buy for a good long while.
Also there was a big push to market towards people who don't normally buy video games. My Grandmother owned a DS and loved Animal Crossing, and hasn't touched a video game console before or, I believe, since.

Also handhelds always sold better than home consoles (up to that point, phones changed that, obviously).

and the ds had:
Mario Kart DS
Mario 64 DS
Two Mario RPGs
Three Castlevania games
Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum
Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver
Pokemon Black and White/2
Three Phoenix Wright games
Four Professor Layton games
Two Advance Wars games
Two Final Fantasy remakes that are in 3D
Radiant Historia
The World Ends With You
Ghost Trick
Hotel Dusk
Contra 4
3 Dragon Quest remakes
Dragon Quest 9
Elite Beat Agents
Kirby Super Star Ultra, Squeak Squad, Mass Attack
and much, much more.
and you want to tell me that the PSP has ANYTHING on this beast that provides both quality AND quantity?
lol
lmao

Just look at the fucking thing, why woudn't you want to play anything on it?

>and you want to tell me that the PSP has ANYTHING on this beast that provides both quality AND quantity?
Hey whoa buddy
DS had the PSP beat in quantity, sure, but the PSP was also no slouch.
Lest we forget, it had
3 Monster Hunter games
4 Armored Core games
2 Metal Gear Solid games AND 2 Metal Gear Acid games
A VASTLY superior JRPG library
And A FUCK-TON of remakes of PS1 games, on top of basic PS1 backwards-compatibility

And also, was the best emulation machine money could buy, for a solid decade there

They were both amazing machines though, to be clear

as a kid I was always simultaneously really jealous of the kid that had a PSP while also having no fucking idea what you actually play on a PSP. I ended up getting one for christmas eventually and I don't think I put anything on it other than PS1 games, which honestly portable PS1 still really kicks ass.

pokemon and mario kart
