What are you guys going to be doing on this free weekend?

God I still need to finish that expansion
But between having my stuff locked in Mog Wardrobes and needing to redo all my Macros/Setup Gearswap again I dunno if it's worth it all

They'd have to remake the entire game as single player with a totally revamped UI and combat system for me to even consider trying it.

I mean the game is already single player but i'm not sure if they will ever revamp the UI i think there was a reason why they couldn't

why would i play this with the existence of ffxiv

You'll eventually run out of content in XIV.

How exactly is combat in XI handled? It looked decidedly different from what I'm used to seeing.

Melee have weapon skills wich have a somehow called "property" to it. Then another person or yourself can do another weapon skill with a property that can skillchain with the previous one sso you can skill chain for more damage.
Mages with spells can magic burst these skill chains with the corresponding element to do more damage.
Everything else is your standard old final fantasy rpg elements.

Basic Combat is Auto-Attack
Weapon Attack Speed is affected by a Weapons Delay + any Buffs (Such as Haste)
The Higher the Delay, the more time it takes to make an Attack
So a Dagger is faster than a Great Axe, for example in terms of attack speeds
Haste can help make the delay shorter in-between Attacks, and is a core part of how current XI handles fighting (Along with Double + Triple Attack)
Landing attacks allows you to build TP, which can be used to perform Weapon Skills; every weapon has their own type of Weapon Skills
Certain Weapon Skills are more potent with more TP

Sounds interesting. I oughta give XI a go then. Still sounds like it has a pretty dedicated community still. Last I heard of it was on a PS2 demo disc that had a trailer for it.

Take into account that in retail now you will play like 60 hours of story with little to no human interaction.

Very much so, it's still pretty popular
Last I played Asura was still the most populated English-Speaking Server, but I also hear some user's made a Linkshell (Guild) on another server some time ago
Someone else in the thread may be able to tell you if Asura is still the go-to or if the user Linkshell is still alive or not

The /vrpg/ guild is on Phoenix. Pretty cool and helpful people. I always seen people telling straight to not go to asura. if you want a high pop server go behemoth. If you wanna play with the people from /vrpg/ go phoenix and just go there and ask for an invite on the board or maybe they're around here.

How difficult is the pre endgame stuff? I'm interested in playing, but I don't want it to be a boring cakewalk like XIV.

On retail it depends. If there's a triple exp thingy going on you'll get levels way too fast that everything will be a cakewalk (except for some like 1 or 2 fights that are hard not by itself but how fucking unreliable trust sometimes are). If you don't power level also it will be somehow acceptable but nothing hard since trust are like cheating in this game.

I prefer a clean menu based UI to the weird shit they try and pass off on us these days

try playing on a private server like Nasomi so you can experience the magic of 75-cap CoP era (aka prime FFXI). You're allowed to dualbox (control two characters at once) and xp rates are adjusted so you can level to 75 in vanilla without a party if you have a nice synergetic combo (I did RDM main screen and PLD second screen, for instance). Definitely one of the more challenging things I've tried at any point, controlling one char can be a snoozefest but swapping back and forth between two was juuuust right for me personally

>needing to multibox to enjoy a game
dropped

>Want a full team of Elvaan F trusts because harem lmao
>There's not a single proper healer for it but fucking plenty who have /Whm
The Elves are too strong for their own good

or you could just socially interact with another player

Can anyone give me a rundown of how Corsair is in FFXI? I've been talking to a lot of people in XIV about what possible jobs could be introduced in the future and they consistently bring up Corsair. What exactly is it besides a pirate?

It's a support job that buffs allies with a blackjack like gambling system and also does damage with guns.

It will never make it into XIV because support jobs don't fit into XIV's job trinity. The XIV Bard is a DPS for fuck's sake.
