FFT or Tactics Ogre. Both are brilliant games, FFT has a really steep difficulty curve so it puts a lot of people off, try it out and if it's kicking your ass too much try playing TO instead.

I'd say emulate, the PSP version has a notorious issue with slowdown during spell animations which can be fixed if you apply a patch, just search for the FFT slowdown patch.

I've never really heard complaints on a difficulty curve in vanilla though
