>No other game like Demon Souls at the time
>Dark Souls was immensely popular
>Now we have clones riding its coattails
Shit's great. Much better than Oblivion and Skyrim.

There were, but nobody gave a shit.
It's still a mystery to me why DeS got so popular.

Well what games were there?

Evergrace, Forever Kingdom, Severance, Rune off the top of my head

Bet Metroidvania doesn't trigger your autism.

>Third Person shit with a stamina system is what Soulslike means
Is Skyrim soulslike too?
There's no dodge rolls in these games. Who are you trying to fool?

>souls like

>muh i frames
Demon’s Souls was a third person hack and slash like all the other games he mentioned. One small feature is not enough to make a new unique genre. It’s like calling games “mass effect-likes” because they have a dialogue wheel.

dark souls was ok but the genre has no legs. likes it's reductionist almost to the point of turning the gameplay into a series of qtes with rpg stats slapped on top. There's a huge mod focus for skyrim that just turns it into dark souls and it seems like so much wasted effort to me.

considering that it's almost the main personality of the game, I disagree.
If it doesn't have dodging, it's not Soulslike

I've been playing since Demon's Souls, I think the main things that define a souls-like game would be third person melee-focused combat, stamina management with all attacks consuming stamina or other resources, gear you level up through the game which all becomes on par with one another toward the end being sidegrades to one another, a functionally classless system where your options are not explicitly restricted by your starting character and you can dump all of your levels into health, strength, endurance or whatever, and certain level design quirks ("Door does not open from this side," etc.). Rolling doesn't have to be it because you can play a Souls game without rolling. That's lameo talk.

>There's no dodge rolls in these games
You don't talk shit about games you haven't played lol.

>Metroidvania
Dumb term.
Means nothing if you haven't played Metroid or Castlevania. In fact there's nothing Castlevania like in any of these games with big maps these days.

Search Action is more appropriate.

>you haven't played Metroid or Castlevania
>2022
Even if you're like 12 you should have no right to access games if you have not played the classics.
Have some fucking self respect kiddo.
>Search Action
lol
lmao even

All the clones like Code Vein, and Nioh, and Surge, and....???

Nigga, where's the Castlevania part in Hollow Knight? I just see Metroid. Search Action makes sense, you search for shit and they're mostly action games.

>I think the main things that define a souls-like game would be third person melee-focused combat, stamina management with all attacks consuming stamina or other resources
Nah it's definitely dodge rolling management, fighting bosses with bussing themes, and dying in 3 hits that everyone remembers fondly of Dark Souls. No one gave a shit about anything else honestly.
Everyone grinded the bossfights until they finally won and yell "Fuck you!"

come up with a better name

You get to build your shit with limited badge slots.
It's basically the same as swapping armor pieces.

in metroid you only collect upgrades
you dont have optional equipment with different stats and effects

I never played those games. Can't give an opinion.
