I think it's one of the last good versions of the game, especially compared to what microsoft is doing with it right now.

i only like the latest version because anything else feels outdated. 1.12.2 is a big checkpoint for modpacks and it feels very similar to latest version so maybe that.

Pre-1.19.84 will become the new standard version fo Minecraft for modpacks going forward.

I guess microsoft is not the worst corporation to buy it, even Disney had interests in buying it, but they are known for breaking/changing things that work fine. Just think about Windows 11 - Why? Win 10 is fine as it is why not keep on improving that?

It didn't have any dumb bullshit like elytras or tridents or whateverthefuck, and was a modding sweetspot.
I started not liking the game much after 1.18 came out. The caves and minecraft structures update really ruined it for me.
I got tired of the older versions of mc because I did mostly I could think of there.
I play only singleplayer so I don't give a shit about what microsoft is doing.
