When did this series starting going to shit? I only played a few after pic related but this was the last good one imo. The new ones are so fucking bloated.

revelations was the last decent one but even then the series was already in decline. they dropped the ball hard with 3, and black flag was good but not because it was an AC game, but because it was a good pirate game.
Black Flag was fun.
After 2 was when the original story was thrown out the window in favor of turning AC into a yearly franchise so immediately after 2.
Brotherhood was Ok just because it was riding off of 2s content heavily.
>When did this series starting going to shit?
the cracks starting appearing when original writer left half way into brotherhood if memory serves and the plot went down the toilet. revelations was only good to see the meeting of ezio's and altair's stories. 3 was an utter slog of a game where half the damn thing was a tutorial and some the dumbest dlc i have ever seen in a video game. black flag i still think started out as a game unrelated to ac (the parts of it when you're doing dumb shit like trailing and eaves dropping are quite good) that had dumb assassin shit bolted on at the eleventh hour just to sell it.
the seeds were already sown with "annual releases" as user said.
things come to full effect with Black Flag because as user said, that game taught them that they can get away with making a game that has nothing to do with AC at all.
Syndicate was when everything fell down.
It was always shit.
The first one was pretty average but #2 basically improved it in every way.
On asscreed 3. Shit protagonist, shit story, shit setting, final boss fight just a bunch of epic QTE, and they killed Desmond.
3
I would agree that Brotherhood was when it started going downhill. II was the peak, and BH initiated the downward slope, but it was still a fun game. Revelations was already quite mediocre and then 3 was pretty boring, save for the ship mechanics that they then expanded upon in Black Flag. Sadly, at that point the series was already fucked and IMO, the ship combat could not make up for all the other tedious shit.
Playing back through 2 the story is actually super weak without the dlc - shits finally picking up and then they just fast forward to the end. Black Fag was really good
1,2 and Brotherhood are all great imo. Yes 1 is great.
Revelations is clearly where things started to get shit but its not terrible or anything.
3 onwards sucks imo. Yes I think Black Flag sucked.
Then the 3 recent games are just awful. The Egypt, Greece and Viking ones. Just tedious boring rpg games.
Story and assassinations were weaker in II than in I, but main character and general gameplay were much better. Cities/towns were also kino. That was honestly one of the main reasons I enjoyed playing the games so much, historical city porn. Sadly that stopped with 3 and 4 and then I couldn't be bothered anymore when the cities returned in later entries.
It started with brotherhood since it was the peak of the franchise. Revelations seemed like too much of a rehash and the yearly releases started.
After that the series lost its focus and quality dipped again with how buggy Unity was (I'm playing through unity now and it's actually pretty good). It had bugs, microtransactions, shitty combat, forced multiplayer, and a protag who was just meh.
Then, the series started to take a more massive dip with syndicate. It was turning into more of an RPG and then we got the modern day assassin's Creed where you can't one hit kill anyone.
2 and Brotherhood are the peak of the series. Revelations is meh, and 3 is probably the worst mainline game in the series. Black Flag and Rogue are decent and Unity would have been a big step up if it wasnt rushed and Arno wasnt the second worst character next to Connor. Syndicate is meh and would have been better if Evie was the only playable character. Origins is good but at that point Ubisoft was solely focused on exponentially increasing the size of their games and both Odyssey and Valhalla are a bloated mess of busy work.
I still enjoyed Odyssey, and I'm currently playing through Valhalla, but goddamn these games don't need to be this fucking big. Valhalla is making me consider dropping the series once I finish it.
The rot was already creeping in during AC Brotherhood when the subject 16 puzzles did the whole "muh capilalism" bad and then said nothing about commies.
They also milked all of Ezio's story for everything they could before making AC3 which was dogshit.
>AC1/ACII/AC Brotherhood/AC Revelations
All good. It went to shit afterwards.
Black Flag was good and far better that Brotherhooh and Revelations
what made you play so much odyssey and origins if you think theyre shit?
>Syndicate was when everything fell down.
That would be Unity
I honestly never got why people consider Brotherhood or Revelations good. They felt like cheap expansions or cynical cash grabs that wanted to bank off the success of ACII and how popular Ezio became. Personally, I don't think we ever needed his entire life story. AC3 was also kinda meh, but had the best villain in the franchise. Feels like Black Flag rejuvenated the IP, even if it wasn't a traditional AC game and more of a pirate adventure. Unity was as step in the right direction with its combat and parkour being the best and smoothest in the series, and the level design was pretty good too. Unfortunately, the game came out in a broken state, which caused a massive backlash and most people refused to see it beyond the surface. I think it's this backlash and the Syndicate flopping was what drove Ubisoft to abandon the old formula and start from scratch. Too bad the new formula is shit. Origins has to be one of the most baffling changes I've see a franchise do. Ubisoft clearly wanted that sweet Witcher money, and they succeeded because brain-dead chip consoomers gobbled it up and declared it the best AC game since ACII, which was far from the truth. That was the point where the series truly died and it doesn't help that Bayek was a shit protagonist contrary to popular belief. A shame what this franchise ended up being reduced to, throwing way it's own premise and distancing itself from what made it special in the first place. Would have been better off dead, but it is what it is.
We could see the signs in 4 already with how janky a lot of stuff was. They managed to get away with that until unity kicked them in the balls and fully buried the old series. I do like nu ac but the identity of the series is gone.
No unity was actually good once the bugs got fixed. The release was a disaster.
Unity had the best parkour in the series though
Brotherhood
When Syndicate and Odyssey released
Unity is a mediocre game, even patched. Syndicate is just a worse version of Unity and came out with basically zero fanfare because of Unity's fallout. Had Unity been good and polished the series would'n't have become a witcher3 knockoff
