I will never understand how people self-insert. I know it's a very, very common thing and that some people can't not do it, but I just do not get it. I just play the character that's the most appealing for whatever reason without a general preference for male or female. It depends on the game.

Kind of. Some games make the opposite sex PC your rival. Of those that do that, ORAS kind of implies your rival has a crush on your character and they basically go on a not-date in the post-game story. SM/USUM had the game's main heroine Lillie say a few different lines based your gender: if your character is male she says things that imply a crush, if your character is female she just talks about idolizing you.

Probably the games with the biggest difference are BW and B2W2, since in the post-game of both of those you can ride the ferris wheel with some different character based on the season, and they're generally the opposite sex as your character and can have some weirdly charged things to say. B2W2 also has you get the phone number of an idol you can meet with, and they're the opposite sex as your player character.

I find that when I force myself to choose the male option in games I tend to actually complete them, or at least get near the end before dropping them.
