Does anyone else think its weird how the trinity ended up being Tank/Healer/DPS...

Does anyone else think its weird how the trinity ended up being Tank/Healer/DPS? Because if we look at traditional DnD (which most RPGs are based on), it doesnt seem to make a lot of sense. Lets look at the classic 4 person DnD party:

>Fighter: Tank
>Cleric: Healer/Buffer
>Thief: Disarms traps/picks locks. maybe does ranged damage
>Mage: Does some damage, but mostly serves as a crowd control and debuffer

Since most games dont really make use of traps anymore, the natural trinity is thus Fighter/Cleric/Mage. And it means the trinity is actual Tank/Healer/Crowd Control. DPS really has nothing to do with it, and damange is not really the focus of any role. Most of the damage comes from the Tank, in fact, but its also a result of the Cleric's buffing spells + the Mage's weakening spells.

I find it so weird how when people say to "move on" past the trinity, that every role should DPS. If anything, DPS is the odd one out. It should really be Tank/Heal/Crowd Control.

Blizzard already figured this out. World of Warcraft has crowd control for all their fps classes.

DnD is turn based and has a LOT of positioning and magic bullshit, while vidya tends to be simpler and in real time

the MMO trinity is also easier to understand for gamers when compared to actual combat tactics

DPS also tends to include mages, Healers too, but with a more support focus. Crowd Control also becomes a DPS job

I don't know, not many games have actual tanks outside MMOs

It's just a shifting of responsibility so you don't have damage and defense concentrated in the same role. Tank and DPS swapped damage and crowd control basically, and MMO "crowd control" is really just aggro management.

every dnd based RPG has tanks. like baldurs gate

What do the acronyms stand for? BETA? TSF? MLRS? FH?

damanage and defense should be concentrated in same role

Aliens
Tactical surface fighter
Multiple launch rocket system
Field howitzer

useful tanks are pretty rare
it's usually just dps + healer

Then the crowd control role has nothing to do after they apply their debuffs

remove healer make hybrid healer/dps classes

mmos are fixed

Fascinating how well thought out is the alt universe.
Props to kouki for that

This is a quality post user, I'm glad of you

MMO players are too stupid for basic RPG concepts, and especially too stupid for something like DnD style rolls.
It's why games like FFXIV and WoW make as much effort as possible to dumb down and remove as many RPG elements as possible.

Here guys, I spotted dnd nerd. Kill him.

I can't say I like the RPS triangle.

interesting point and question.
answered pretty quickly

good job lads, back to shitposting

This post is too stupid for words.
Why is it always retards who think they can reinvent the wheel?

well in dnd they have their sling weapon to help out

the general role of the mage/wizard is to only use spells when they are really necessary.

The most critical part of why D&D works and games don't is moving out of combat range gets you free attacked.

If a boss rushed past a line of fighters to try and kill a cleric all the fighters would get a free attack and likely kill the boss in a single round.
While in MMOs you have this magic argo/hate aspect that is used to control boss movements.

But he's not reinventing the wheel, he's discussing the state of the current wheel in comparison to its predecessor.

I feel like the Classic RPG/JRPG Party really understates the Fighter Archtype. Yeah they'll probably be the main Hero. But he'll be in the Thick of it while the Magic and Cleric are 20 feet away, as would the Archer be if there is one. Maybe there's a Rogue or Monk skirting around the edges, and that's fine, that's tactical. But man it's gotta be a huge pressure for the Warrior's only friendly face on the front lines to be weaving in and out when he's expected to tank every hit.

But he clearly has zero understanding of why the wheel works the way it does.
Trying to make a new wheel that's better than the current wheel doesn't work when you're an idiot that doesn't understand why the current wheel works.
Every single one of these holy trinity threads is full of retards thinking they can change this system and not even realizing why it exists or understanding why it works.

maybe we ended up with the trinity because dnd didnt work well in real time gameplay? people fuck up constantly but they make actual decision mistakes, in dnd you just roll bad so your character does a fucky wucky and misses.

No one is talking about reinventing the wheel but you. He's comparing the MMO trio to the D&D party and asking why it changed.

Except he does in the OP, right there at the last line. Please next time try reading.

Are you implying that people don't make decisions when playing D&D? Or that people don't make mistakes when playing tabletop?
This is nonsense.

DPS is the odd one out because it doesn't map well onto the obvious prototype of the MMO trio that is the D&D party. That's not trying to reinvent the wheel, it's further commentary on the difference between the two. Do you have any input on his point or are you just going to keep arguing with imaginary opponents?

mistakes can be offset or emphasized by RNG in dnd. either way, theres also the factor of there being much more consequence in dnd than any mmo could have. the dnd systems just dont fit in a game that needs to have mass appeal.
