I'd say it's more of a management/builder game than RTS, you don't directly control units you just build rooms and give orders to diggers, different rooms attract different monsters and serve different purposes like sleeping, feeding, researching, entertainment, etc. It's definitely got tower defense elements since you can grab and drop units at spots to stop enemies. The second game also has traps you can build.
