It's just the usual thing of people adopting memes without knowing their full meaning. Happens all the time.
There's a really good one on Any Forums, too. Around 2016 is when all the antifa vs trump voter street fights took place and Any Forumsfags were quick to label antifa-fags as "larpers", which fit perfectly because that was basically what they were doing. However that time was also when we got one of the biggest newfag surges ever and they didn't know that "larp" is short for "live action role play" and just assumed that it's a funny meme word for "pretending" and started using it like that.
Next time you see someone accusing someone of "larping" you instantly know that it's a post 2016 redditor.
