Youngfag here. I just beat Link's Awakening on Switch and loved it. I'm confused as to what game I 'should' play next, though. When I subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online I downloaded like five different Zelda games (The original, II, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Majora.

Which one 'should' I play first? I'm leaning towards A Link to the Past, but I wanted to ask for your advice first.

I hate that you have to "Subscribe" for your zelda games instead of being able to just buy them like on the virtual console.

Link to the past next, its seen as a golden cow of 2d.

Zelda 1 and 2 are interesting academically but most of their strongest ideas are iterated upon and improved in later titles. A Link to the Past is still incredibly strong game and if you enjoyed Link's Awakening then it should feel like a real expansion of the concept. There's a few parts where things slow down pretty severely if you don't know what to do next, but that's any exploration-heavy game. Ocarina of Time is also great and is reasonable to try if you'd prefer something 3D. Majora's Mask is beloved but structurally very strange, even as a huge fan of Zelda I didn't personally get into it.

In short, ALttP then OoT then whatever. Emulate Twilight Princess at some point.

I like it. I got to play Super Metroid and Mario World for like twenty bucks.

ocarina
then link to the past
then majora's mask

II>majora>ocarina>link to thepast

some people aren't too keen on them but the oracle games are really good.

The only why I like the subscription thing is because I get to play games I would never buy.

1 then 2 then link to the past then ignore everything else all 3d zeldas are shit

Shit forgot to put zelda 1 in between out and alttp

I honestly believe a link to the past is the only perfect video game ever made.

Zelda is the redheaded stepchild that have some interesting aspects but my take is they experimented and found what doesn't make a good zelda game. If you want to play zelda one the third quest romhack is a better way to play. A controversial take from someone that loves Majora's mask. the 3DS version is better. LTTP is my personal favorite I'm willing to admit some aspects that will hurt the experience like only having one item slot and being pretty obtuse with some progression. Just look up where to find quake the game doesn't help you at all. Ocarina is the quintennial formula setting game for the series. Every element is iteration on the core formula. For a academic I want to understand game design you should play it for that reason. and hot take Its aged probably the worst out all the zelda games.

play LTTP, OOT, MM in that order. The first Zelda doesn't hold up well, and Link's Adventure is dogshit.

Zelda 2 is the redhead stephead child

Okay I've started ALTTP. I love the opening chapter already.

I really wish they'd make more 2d zelda games. the 2d ones after LttP were good, but fell too much into the "Puzzle boss that you defeat with the dungeon item" trap instead of feeling like a real fight like in LTTP.

What do you mean bro?

Link escorting Zelda out of the castle is SO CUTE.

2D Zelda is better than 3D Zelda

better play more snes topview games like as alttp

secret of mana
chrono trigger
final fantasy 3

A link to the past is still one of the best games ever
