Incorporate gaming into it to help you. Games like Ace Attorney where you might already know the routes / certain plot points will help you add context when learning words. SMT is great for learning how to spot names as well as getting used to transliteration quirks. GBA and SNES games don't (usually) have full kanji support so it will get you good practice with hiragana and katakana. Later Dragon Quest games have furigana to help with kanji readings.
