3 was totally butchered with the daddy-Kiryu simulation and all those absolute time-waster orphanage tasks. And when it finally started going somewhere, everything is swept away with a long info-dump scene and a random "lol not-CIA bad! Amirite??" asspull.

Yakuza 3 is best in terms of unique and comforting atmosphere, stable and personal storyline for Kiryu, which was a great improvement over being a police officer's lackey in Yakuza 2. Also Okinawa is an amazing location.
Yakuza 4 adds bunch of protagonists, does an awesome job making them feel unique from each other which kinda sucks in Y5. Overall it suffers from other badly written and uninspiring characters, especially villains.
Yakuza 5 takes a huge drift into get the fuck all into one game, overall the best game from the series, providing the best combat in the mainline series and tons of enjoyable content.
