All of the core Mario characters are already represented in MK8. There is literally nobody except Hat Goomba shit that's missing. People love to suck off CTR for putting in hyper obscure nobodies like in the OP but there was far more excitement for crossovers like Spyro than any of them. At least the Mario variants make people want to play him for a change, instead of his white bread default stats.

I like Mario spinoff/extended universe characters staying self contained. It allows those games to have their own identity and personality rather than forcing them to sanitize their personality to fit in with how bare bones the typical Mario Sports games are. Like on paper, putting WarioWare characters in a Mario sports/kart game sounds cool, but they'd probably strip a lot of their personality and maybe even design just to do make it fit.

CTR brought back every character that was in Crash's racing games. Meanwhile, MK8 removed spinoff staples like Birdo and Diddy, and it ignored characters that were reintroduced in the mainline spotlight like Pauline. MK8 loses on the roster front because they cared more about recolors and crossover characters than the already established cast. This is more annoying because of the fact that Tour did what people wanted for a roster where you get plenty of characters while allowing for alternate skins that don't waste slots.
