If they kept it as a fun class based MP shooter with lots of modes and options it would be just that today, but they tried to make an astroturf esport that then had to appeal to a broad audience which they did by turning everything in it gay.

Maybe it's just the genres I play, but I only ever hear this sentiment expressed when there's a single piece of equipment and/or strategy that overcentralizes the meta around itself and makes it the only "real" option.

Zerg are blatantly overpowered to the point where some random euro can pick it up and start dominating tourneys in 2 years, only losing to more experienced zerg. Meanwhile even the most dedicated protoss mains are lucky to get a few representatives in top 8, maybe one guy in top 4 due to a lucky PvP bracket, before zerg inevitably overruns them. Terrans occasionally get patch cheese but at the end of the day the entire perception of balance with other races boils down to the insane micro of one stubborn old man who would be immortal demon king if he ever picked up zerg.

i'm mostly talking about guilty gear strive, where pressure and character tool kits are so homogenized pressure is structured basically identically and you have to use 1 or 2 very specific options to reliably escape it, as opposed to it's older iterations where you can make pressure extremely dynamic and defense is also dynamic to counter that. i'm not saying this is all around a bad thing cause strive is still a fun game but it really makes the problems of guilty gear stand out way more because lots of characters just don't the bullshit they can do to compete like they used too. don't have the ability to convert? thats always been bad for these games but it's even worse in strive, stuff like that.
