there's no updated version of it like System Shock where you can use your mouse like a non-psychopath

There is. Check out Ultima Underworld Portable. It has the mouselook mod as an option (and the superior mt32 music as well). But besides, even with the original controls it's a lot more playable than System Shock since there's way less keys and it's a lot slower, less twitchy, game.

i did. i havent finished ultima underworld 2, however.

What's a paladin?

That's Ultima IX. We don't talk about Ultima IX

Why the fuck do Arena and Daggerfall still get talked about and rediscovered and not the Underworld games? They came first, inspired the Elder Scrolls and honestly hold up way, way better than either of them.

Should I play Ultima 4-6 before playing UU1? I heard UU2 is a sequel or something to Ultima 7.

I heard the Unity port is good.

The stories in those games are nothing special.

Nah. Although Ultima 4-7 are worth playing regardless. Ultima Underworld started off as its own thing and only became an Ultima game fairly late into development. And you can tell because it barely fits into the established lore. With Underworld 2 they knew it was going to be an Ultima going into it so they tied the plot into the actual Ultima cannon, so gameplay-wise it's a direct continuation of Underworld 1 but story-wise it's a direct sequel to Ultima 7 (not to be confused with Serpent Isle, the other direct sequel to Ultima 7).

Ultima's 4-6 are great though. Although the further back you go the more archaic and unintuitive they get. Still amazing games underneath.

Still unfinished sadly and the last update was a few years ago. There is a mouselook patch available though.

I prefer Arx Fatalis.

Why haven't you beaten Dungeon Master?

1) TES is still relevant as a series, Ultima hasn't been for about 20 years
2) Arena and Daggerfall both got released for free by GoG; they've given them away for free twice at this point, with the latest release only being a couple of months ago and it came packaged with a pre-installed version of the latest unity sourceport
3) Ultima Underworld's unity port was avandoned by the devs years ago, meaning it's buggy and unfinished

this is all obvious stuff, why did none of it occur to you?

Does EA still own Ultima?

Too old, unironically. Could never get into it or System Shock 1. Also I hate dosbox.

I recently just did, took me about 20 hours. I was suprised over immersive itself despite being so old. Only thing I am salty about is the music, because it's so old and I lack the technical experience it only played the midi versions of the music which is ultimately inferior to the proper stuff like this.

Is the combat decent in this game?

yes it's very cool and unique, just make sure to get the arx libertatis mod to make mouse casting easier.

>male character wearing nothing but a loincloth and boots
>this is fine
>female character wearing a swimsuit
>REEEEE FUCKING CHUUUUUDSSS

Yeah unfortunately. At least they've been pretty good about selling the old games for cheap and not shutting down fan projects. I believe the Underworld series was free on GOG a few months ago. The only way they've tried to rape the IP in the last 15 years is to shit out a few cheap mobile and Facebook games with the Ultima name, but those have all shut down pretty quickly.
