The ultimate franchise killing moment. Nothing will top this. It was so utterly retarded it not only made any games after it garbage, it retroactively turned all of the previous games in the series into shit as well. It's impossible to have a worse moment than this. It's even worse than "It was all just a dream!" shit, if you can believe it.

For those unaware, the moment pictured is from Star Ocean 3, when you cross a "time gate" into what is actually the 'real world'. It turns out you were all MMO characters who became self aware, and so were all of the characters of the previous games, and so on and so forth. You're all video game characters, and just jumped into reality to kill your creator who is shutting down the MMO.

user, low res tank control "horror" games were only scary when they were new because of the limited graphics and the shit tv picture quality back then. It's literally impossible to make those games good today.

It would be bad enough if it was just contained to that one game but no. They specifically point out all of the past characters/storylines/etc were just events in the MMO.

I don't know who the FUCK in triace thought this was a good idea, but I can only hope they've long since been fired, and buried in an unmarked grave by yakuza hitmen.

I was in high school when this released. One of my bros had been obsessed with the Star Ocean series and was always trying to get us to play it. He even had one of the early roms of the original Star Ocean and everything. When he finished 3 he came to school the next day and told us to forget he'd ever recommended the series. I don't think he mentioned it again.

So when they want to kill this creator guy... was he like a real person who worked on the game? Like a name listed in the credits and everything? Was it an easy fight because he's a regular dude or something? How does killing him stop the MMO from being shut down?

He was basically Lex Luthor as an anime villain, more or less. Just a rich guy who made a game and was shutting it down because it had run it's course. The reality you jump into is called 4D space, and it's futuristic, not like "real life Earth" reality. And no it's not an easy fight, but it's not really hard either. You basically storm his corporate HQ, kill his underlings, and then him, and stop your MMO from being deleted. They didn't really think this through to be honest, because it's not like beating up Bobby Kotick would stop Diablo from being shut down or something. The whole twist is dumb and very badly thought out.

I only just a week ago started playing Star Ocean and only held off on it because of this twist. Is SO3 even worth playing for the gameplay at all or just stick with only SO1 and 2?
