Gen 2 had the popularity of gen 1 to ride.
Gen 3 had to actually be good because gen 2 killed the fad prematurely
After that it stabilised until with gen 6 they realised they could get away with anything and stopped trying.

In gen 2, there existed 10 berries. They could be picked from specific overworld berry trees once per day and had simple names. Berry. Ice Berry. Burnt Berry.
In gen 3, there were 43 berries. They all have unique names, appearances, sizes, tastes, textures, growing patterns, berry tree sprites. They are used not only in battle, but also for pokeblock blending, which is essential for contests and evolving Feebas.
