Is it better to equip battalions to turbo-charge your character's innate advantages(e.g. axe battalion on axe user) or aim for versatility/diversity like how the Vestra Battalion has cavalry effectiveness?

I just ignored battalions for the most part but it would probably be better to double unit strengths

I prefer doubling-up on unit effectiveness, since you rarely have to put someone up against an enemy they're disadvantaged against. Instead I suggest making heavy use of move type effective weapons like the rapier, horse slayer, fly swatter, etc. You'll notice that almost all lance users are mounted.

all map layouts are designed to have all the axe enemies in one place. and the same for the other weapon types. since you can pick your battles it's obvious that you should make each of your units the ultimate slayer of one enemy type.

Former to capitalize on your strengths. Battalions give two things.
1. Higher advantage tier only determines how easily you break Stun Gauges. Now you have
>5 neutral matchups (+0) and 1 advantageous one (+1) or
>4 neutral matchups (+0), 1 disadvantageous one (-1), and 1 better advantageous one (+2)
2. Damage resistance. Enemies will have (Weapon) Buster Lv 1/2/3/4 for +80/85/90/95% damage taken and A rank battalions give -60% damage taken. So you can either take 195%/40% or 135%/100% damage on dis/advantageous matchups with Master classes, but there's never any reason to engage with disadvantegous matchups unless if using a disadvantageous -slayer type weapon like:
>Rapier (Sword, 30 Might + 200 Forging + 30 Reckless Power Lv 3 = 260) VS Cavalier/Paladin/Dark Knight/Holy Knight
>Wingthresher (Sword, 40 Might + 200 Forging + 40 RP3 = 280) VS Pegasus Knight/Falcon Knight
>Horseslayer (Lance, 280 Might) VS Great Knight
>Heavy Spear (Lance, 280 Might) VS Armored Knight/Fortress Knight/Great Knight
>Flycatcher (Lance, 280 Might) VS Wyvern Rider/Wyvern Lord
>Spear of Assal (Lance, 140 Might + 400 Might = 540) VS Great Knight
>Wolf Fangs (Gauntlets, 280 Might) VS Bow Knight
So it'll depend on the map but typically match things up. The achievement for 30,000 advantage KOs and battalion KOs can also be done simultaneously.
It's your class ability (Weapon) Buster Lv 1/2/3/4 for +80/85/90/95% damage deal and +1 advantage tier or your (Weapon)breaker ability from your preferred Master class for +50% damage dealt and +1 advantage tier that matters more.
