I just figured out what is wrong with Klonoa's model in the second game, he wears his face like a face mask which is attached to another patch that is white, and it makes his face look chonky.
It's kind of hard to explain but you can get a good side view of the model in the cutscenes before he chases Tat on the air board.

Friendly reminder that they initially tried to redesign Klonoa for the Wii remake into something much, much worse before people rightfully bitched. So it goes to show that not even in-house Namco devs had a clue then and neither does Monkeynuts

All of the promotional stuff might have been contracted out to an outside artist/studio. A normal practice for remakes/remasters.

yeah he has lots of problems.
you can also see the uv mapping on his ring is badly broken.
the colour values are exploding and eating all the definition around his white parts.
he doesn't have a moving mouth during gameplay and when he talks in cutscenes it's just a 2D texture pasted over his face that scales up and down instead of real mouth animation on his model.

Some people think that this is fine...
though quite a few of the levels don't look that bad, Sea of tears and Volk seem to be trainwrecks, but other stages look fine so it seems that it could have turned out okay with a little more development time.
