It was indeed soul because as recalled by the game director, none of the devs had ever been to america, so they just looked at some pictures, but when they realized it was ugly, dour and soulless (RE1.5, the director literally called it "kusoge" as in "a Sony game") they just did their own thing and it worked.

Re4 has dynamic difficulty if you suck it gets easier. Beating it on gc back in the day on professional I would was easier that beating it with a ps5 or Xbox today, simply because of the button mashing needed for qte.
