>pretty balanced gameplay
>kino map (rumors say there are other than Q2DM1, but nobody ever tried to verify)
>every gun viable if you knew how to play to its advantages
>CG was the ultimate noobgun, that no self-respecting vet used, yet it wasn't frowned upon, cause noobs deserved a chance
>best RG ever
>slow rockets so that it's not the optimal gun for any situation
>limited air-control in movement so you'd have to think how to strafejump
>an armor system that didn't make red be all end all
Q3A was a downgrade and making it the template for all modern arena-shooters made them fail. Worst part is, you cannot play Q2 as it was back in 1997-1998. If you find a server, it's running a modified client with physics resembling Q3, brightskins (something that would get your ass kicked out of the local internet cafe back in the day) and a custom mappack that has all the shitty CPM maps like Aerowalk. Quake 2 back in its glory days was a game that pros and casuals could have fun in equally in deathmatch and it's never coming back. The arena-shooter revival failed big time because the fags making these games, were trying to mimic the wrong game.
INB4 UT, get that slow-ass clunky shit out of here!
This was peak MP FPS and Q3 competifags killed it

Tastyspleen.net's DM is pretty vanilla and no one's forcing you to download extra skins.
no, fuck your retarded RL/LG meta with shitty cramped maps.
Overbalanced gameplay, every weapon does basically the same damage except the rail gun and this means everything is basically equally useless creating no power dynamics for map control, everything devolves to get to quad, get to armor, get to rail. fuck everything else it's only good for defense not offense. Pathetically predictable mp.
arena shooters failed because the market has turned toward selling zoomers lootboxes and progression systems. the prospect of playing a game simply because its fun and competitive makes their brains explode.
Save me, Romero
>John Romero
u mad?
Arena shooters failed and don't attract new players for the same reason as fighting games. Unless you're really good at fps games already you have no chance gitting gud at a game people have been playing for thousands of hours. No one wants to play a game where some boomer is running circles around them as opposed to a game where everyone is new to it and they play people to their skill level. You can say it's their fault for not sticking to it but there's little appeal in unfun games that get good once you master it 1000 hours in
There are mulitple reasons why the (((revival))) failed. The main one being that it was all Quake 3 clones in modern day internet where pro-style movement became the baseline and all the info no how to do it was readily available, without the gradual learning curve. Vets already knew the games in and out and found nothing new and noobs were forced to run by reddit threads before they learned to crawl. Classic shooters back in the day were all the hype cause they were few and the only way to play against people in that manner. Everyone played and very few cared for optimizing their play, info on high-level shit was also scarce and guarded - nobody would teach you strafe-jumping when it gave you an edge, so it wasn't common. People just played to have fun and gradually discovered ways to be better.
TL;DR: vets got the same exact game they were playing for 2 decades and noobs got a game with a vertical wall of a learning curve to begin with.

Yes.

Ah hi alf
Still lying?
>zoomer who never played the game semen slurping shit
Next you will say that Doom MP was shit because no thunderbolt
A Unreal like revival which is Fartnite worked, while Q3A clones failed miserably.
Meanwhile Q1R MP has people playing and having fun, and Q2R MP will follow the same.
as much as i love quake 3, like fucking blizzard RTS games, it killed an entire genre, and any innovation was deemed haram by a minority of vocal grognerds who never played on casual with mods, or professional levels, since they all were tryhards spamming clan arena or fucking defrag with instant respawn and fucked up physics.
>Defrag
I meant CPMA.
Q1 Trickjump, Defrag and Q2Jump are good shit
fpbp
>This was peak MP
No Unreal Tournament 1999 was
youtube.com
I suppose counter strike after that. DesuTBU the best was doom in a box multiplayer on a sun os system because it just never had been before. Quake was brown bland and boring
Quake 4 was a return to SP and that was the game that actually killed the series
CPMA best game ever made. l2p faggot
And then there is this faggot.
Duke 3d MP was better than quake 1, and Q1MP was inferior to Quake 2 and later Unreal.
the ONLY saving grace of Q1MP was Navy Seals, Airquake, Dissolution CTF and obviously Team Fortress.
Even Thresh Fong came to prefer Q2 and Unreal Later on, and then HL + CS
Quake 2 and UT Fought for a year or two, Q3A had a fuckload of issues at release, mainly netcode which id Shipped free Mplayer subscription to remedy that, and then Team Arena happened...
Q2 had the edge because unreal engine was garbage to code mods on it, something Epic fixed out later and became what it is now, and Q2 was piss easy because carmack left it easy so any upstart who learned C++ a week ago could work on it.
And thanks to Q2, CHAOS happened, followed by the creation of better bots programs that were used later by Epic after ut99 and id to make theirs for QL since Q3A bots had issues.
people doesn't know how Q2 helped a LOT in gaming development and even the rise of new devs.
Quake 4 had the best MP in the franchise, casuals and pros loved because it was the right evolution of Quake 3 Physics and movement, but the game was rigged to lose thanks to activision who put CoD2 to release alongside with and the PC release had issues.
I hated Q2 because it was brown, Unreal was the shit for lan games. Original Duke nukem was great for lan gaming as well
