Because copyright has been vastly overextended in a manner that is only legal because the literal Jews being paid off by megacorporations who are in charge of your judiciary have reinterpreted the law governing limits on copyright duration into practical meaninglessness.
In CURRENT YEAR there is no reason for copyright to not expire after a decade. Most properties will have reached maximum saturation with their target audience, will have produced several derivatives of their own work and will likely have dropped further support by that point. Extending copyright past that point is just an attempt by megacorporations and interest groups to hold cultural soft power and maintain free corporate marketing.
By that logic there is no reason for me not to torrent an old game since it is moral and arguably even legal since "limited times" certainly does not mean "90+ years and subject to indefinite extension if congress gets its pockets lined by the mouse" in this or any other universe.

Whether they want to admit to it or not, virtually everyone has an understanding that there's really no harm in copying a game that's totally out of production, that, and even in spite of the fucking mess that is modern copyright law, ease of access to the original media is an objective motivator to a rightsholder to provide a superior product should they choose to commission or produce another.
