I actually consider Gunther one of the more interesting characters of Deus Ex.
He's not really a violent retard, he just knows that his purpose is to be a weapon, and will act with maximum force when unleashed.
He also knows and accepts that he is completely outclassed by the new generation of agents (unlike Navarre, who is actually just a violent retard), and the final confrontation between him and JC is not so much about revenge for Navarre as it's about him wanting to go out like a warrior, in combat with a worthy foe, rather than rust away as an old gray golem only fit for scareing children.
And calling him a Laputan Machine denies him that, hehe.
