Yes but not enough of them have free movement so you're stuck with the same catalog from 1992-2002.

I want some dungeon crawlers that aren't turn based

legend of grimrock

that I haven't played

vaporum

Ultima Underworld
Arx Fatalis
Daggerfall
Battlespire
King's Field
System Shock (not an RPG but essentially a dungeon crawl)
Might and Magic 6-8
Wizards and Warriors (never played, but fits your criteria)

Why did they normalize such a shit feature in an otherwise great genre. Is it because players usually just do donuts over and over to kite enemies?

I could name you as many bad ones as I could good ones. does that mean that I like or hate them?

They're alright. I've played so many of them now that it's gotten a bit old for me though. Rance is another thing completely though. Rance VI is entertaining to me for reasons other than just dungeon crawling gameplay.

No, I dont want to play the windows labyrinth screensaver

Also fuck fake walls, nobody enjoys ramming their face into every wall tile until one gives way

it's because free movement games are harder to make and since new dungeon crawlers are nostalgia throwbacks they go with the grid

I like Wizardry 1, MM6-8

Might and Magic 6 has a mystique I still can't explain to this day

Do you have any recommendations for "free movement" crawlers?

I did in Terra Nova, maybe I'll give it a go in SS1

Give me good turn based dungeon crawlers

Lords of Xulima is a pretty underrated crawler

hell yeah brother, you will use leaning way more often than with the mouselook controls

they're nice

I like the first lands of lore game a lot.

Bernard looks like Rance but as a meth addict.
