Sort of. It got cancelled, but the playable beta can still be downloaded and played. So it's more like it got cancelled but release anyway. It's pretty confusing and it's clear Bethesda didn't actually have a plan .

The way I would do it is I would have classic 2d styled games starting the og Billy Blaze and a more experimental 3d platformer/ tps type games starting the twins.

I don't know what's weirder, the fact that Commander Keen came back after nearly three decades of dormancy as a miscarried shitty mobile game.
or that there were apparently enough oldfags that gave enough of a backlash to get the thing killed, when plenty of other shitty reboots like Thi4f or Dungeon Keeper kept trucking right along despite complaints.

Machine Games is actually a really good developer. I think the mobile game was something Bethesda pushed on them and it ended up cancelled because they managed to talk them out of it.
I'm sure if Beth greenlit a better game, they'd put their full ass into it and make something awesome. That's probably why the quality between the animated segments and gameplay was so vastly different: one was made out of passion, and the other was directed for cash.

Both of those were pushed despite fan outcry because the companies didn't give a shit.
Thi4f was never meant to be a faithful adaptation of the franchise. It was just a recognizable IP they wanted to put on top of their Dishonored clone hoping it would take off. Nobody fell for it, so it flopped.
Dungeon Keeper was also never meant to appeal to old fans. It was only supposed to be a recognizable IP they could milk microtransactions out of. Again, nobody fell for it and it flopped.
This situation is a little different, in that Bethesda were probably hedging with a cheap, expendable project to gauge interest people had in the IP. The general consensus, even from industry vets like Romero and Carmack, was "we'd like to see more from this idea, but not executed like this." I fear Bethesda may have taken the wrong lesson from this, though.
