Escorts are the whole purpose of the game. It's what drives the tension as you're against the clock. The thing you have to realize is you have to give them waypoints in the distance, spamming new waypoints so they'd move faster seems like the intuitive thing to do but that only confuses and slows down the AI. Keep them running forward instead of fighting around you. Once you understand how to direct them, they become disciplined and predictable.

It's the best game in which you lead people around ever made. Escort being a dirty word in gaming is mostly a meme. This game is incredible and filters people because it's hard, not because it's unfair or doesn't work.

I just played the game again last week starting at level 1. Saved every survivor, got the true ending, *and* killed 53k zombies. An understanding of how the game works is worth more than level ups. The game is built to allow you to do all of this if you know what you're doing. The game is about learning and mastery.
