What went wrong with the Starfox franchise?

They didn't make more games like adventures

Nintendo not having any clear direction for the series.

Rail shooters aren't appealing to the modern audience. They never evolved the franchise after Adventures. Star Fox Assault's multiplayer was kino. Sadly most people probably didn't experience it.

This and it doesn't seem like they're doing any work on developing the characters and their dynamics to be interesting / fun to watch. Even if a game isn't very innovative, people will still like it because they're invested in the characters.

Adventures did an appreciable job of giving a little actual character to the characters. I'm not talking about origins or backstories, just personalities beyond a single vague trait.

The fanbase ruined Star Fox reputation of being Nintendo's innovative series to being another furry-fest; furries happen to literally be gay.

Starfox assault was a good game, but the on rails segments held them back. If starfox can just dump the on rails and be more like an arcade dogfighter it would probably do well.

It really wasnt, everything was very off about it.
They made a multiplayer game and then they added a single player mode on top in 5 minutes and its so obvious.
