What happened to Volition in between the development of SR2 and SR3 to cause the subsequent decline of the series? SR3 was such a step down from 2.

3 is easily best of the series. 4 could be it but it's so different that i don't count it as not in same linearity of shitty gta clones. still fun as fuck

TH*Q and Volition's higher ups wanted SR3 to appeal to the lowest common denominator who are entertained by the most banal of dick jokes like so the series because all flash with 0 substance. SR1 and 2 were already pretty lowbrow but SR3 took the ball and ran with it and ruined everything.

How far has Saints Row as a whole drifted from the original vision?

What's cool about this trailer is that it shows when the Saints were originally going to be green instead of purple.

SR3 is the best one, now continue seething until the end of time.

SPBP

Show me the spraying shit on building minigame in SR3.

my bet is they wanted to step out of the GTA clone shadow that was cast on it hence why 3 and 4 are so drastically different in tone and story and why things went super wacky. i dont know about 3 but i had fun with 4

1 was the best

*spits in your face*

Jaros has a shit sense of humor and put everything he liked into 3, straying away from the serious tone of 2

You've never actually played Saints Row 3.

>3 is easily best of the series.
Absolutely godamn not.

Didn't the director for SR2 leave Volition afterwards? I have a vague memory he went to work for Ubisoft or something.

He's one of the lucky ones then who didn't see how bad things got after 2.

Nothing happened. They had to meet demands for better quality graphics on the same hardware as their last two games, so the game had to change in scope and visual style.

sounds about right

Unfortunately I did.

Yeah, it was become San Andreas obviously that it was changed. It's funny because everyone goes on about the Saints being purple as a specific and deliberate choice because purple represents royalty when they weren't even meant to be purple in the first place and anyone who thinks they wanted to draw comparisons between the Saints and royalty definitely didn't play the fist game.

I think they just leaned into what they thought people wanted.

SR1 was a fairly straightforward GTA clone
SR2 was a little wackier. plenty of comedy, but the Boss was the straightman who grounded it.

And SR2 was more successful than SR1 right? so more comedy = more better?
SR3 went all in on the comedy and where it went wrong I think was also making the Boss a buffoon. There was no reprieve from constant antics.

Didn't a lot of the original SR1 staff leave after the development of SR2?

Gta fucked with their confidence too much. They got it into their heads that they couldn't possibly compete with that, so they went the cartoony -ridiculous route. Personally, I would have liked to see them try again and do it right this time. None of that cartoony-ridiculous crap, just a straight gta clone game, but actually good. Never going to happen, clearly, since they are already rebooting the game right now and doubling down hardcore on the cartoony-silly style.

Don’t forget that half of SR2’s soul comes from Mr Sheffield

>SR3 went all in on the comedy and where it went wrong I think was also making the Boss a buffoon.
They did worse than that. It was a major plot point of SR1&2 that the boss was a complete and utter psychopath. They completely tossed that character attribute from SR3. Instead they made the boss an egotist but an apparently justified one because they are so fucking amazing and everyone loves them. Even regular civilians when you'd think the whole world would hate such a violent mass murderer. They basically made the criminal version of Duke Nukem from DNF. They keep telling us how great they are and how everyone loves them but I can't see why. You can't just order the audience to love a character. It doesn't work that way. This is common problem with modern media. They keep expecting us to like characters without giving us a reason why we should.

You're forgetting that the people of Stilwater loved the Boss back in SR2 as you progressed the game so even back then the Boss was becoming a minor celebrity.

2 is the best
don't (You) me

No, they didn't. Only his criminal cohorts liked him. Basically the revelation of SR1 was "Ackshully, you are the demons" and SR2 is "and then John was a demon". It's only with SR3 that suddenly the boss is a celebrity that everyone loves.
