I really wish they built on 9 as the foundation for the future. It had its flaws (story on disk 4, combat being slow, card game kinda meh, etc.) but it had so many good ideas.
I really enjoyed how 10 and 12 had their own spins on it, and 7 and 8 were great in their own rights too.

The appeal of 9 is simple. The makers knew Final Fantasy was going the way of jpop boy going through anime drama, and that's what made sense because that's what made money but they wanted to send the old style of with a love letter. It's the first version of something like World of Final Fantasy, where they just sat back and said "Hasn't this been a neat franchise?" So if you were around for the old style and get something out of the nostalgia, it's good. If you are into the new era or playing things here and there, it doesn't have the same impact, you are not the target demographic. That's okay.

I really enjoyed both WoFF and Strangers of Chaos. They both had their own spin on giving homage to the characters, music and settings of the older games and seemed to be somewhat free of the Nomura bullshit.
I really think they just need to reboot FF & KH to reverse the damage at this point. 16 is a really good start by just taking a year to polish it (aka 'we don't want a Cyberpunk/FFXV situation on our hands')
Imagine a KH game without the batshit insane story. Just a kid and his Disney pals solving more fleshed out mysteries and issues in nice settings. Maybe just make the bad guys Disney characters instead of 'my cool OC do not copy' from deviant art.

Re-reading this, I feel dumb. SoC's story was exactly what FF should never be. I was just so happy with the levels, art, music and gameplay that I pushed the story to the back of my mind.
