So now that the dust how settled, how was it truly? Why did this reach 10 years, and why don't other recent mmos and online games manage to do the same?

It managed 10 years because of the combat, and Elins.
3 years for the combat and 7 years because Elins+combat.
Even though the other races are fun, the financial reason is; Elins.

It was a good game that did great in execution of bringing action-combat to the MMO world. For it to last 10 years was a great accomplishment considering the difficult time it launched.
Subscription MMO's were turning into a niche and it's an even larger niche when you're only launching on one platform.
The game launched with gorgeous graphics for its time, huge areas to explore, encouraged social interaction, and launched with a difficulty that busted your ass with mechanics and hardened you compared to other games that started so slow.
The game did a lot good, but they lost a lot of the talent that keeps a game engaging. WoW has active storylines and a team of writers and directors. Tera was much smaller in budget and couldn't sustain the talent to keep the game engaging.
The information is probably gone now, but TERA was supposed to have a very large expansion focused on airships, air traversal much like Elyon.

Most I know migrated to Lost Ark or PSO, but there's also people flocking to private servers like Menma and Tera-Europe. Stuff that still runs on the aspects of the game everyone liked, like Island of Dawn.
