I just really like SRPGs. I don't have much love for any of the Disgaea characters, but I like some of the classes and the cool skills they have. Being able to toss a Felynn into a group of melee attackers and have her kill them on their turn with counter attacks will always be fun.
The tropes and story beats are way to "Japanese humor" for me though. The only protagonist I really liked was Adel and his wife.

I played the dumpster fire DS port of 1 and somehow enjoyed it enough to buy 3 when I first got a PS3 and I've played most every one since. Still need to play 2 and D2.

a demo disc i got with a trailer for the first game, and that fucking song, tsunami bomb (i think)
ive only beat 1, DD2 and makai kingdom, but i've played a few others. Is 6 any good? it finally came out on my platform recently

Either PC or Complete. PC is a port of the PSP version with most of the content of the DS port.
Complete is a remaster with D5 sprites, and some new content, but some monsters and classes are replaced by newer ones due to laziness, despite some other classes like striders having new sprites and everything.

pretty sure i just randomly saw it on GameTrailers back in 2003. It had the tsunami bomb song playing to. That's how I got into disgaea and tsunami bomb.
