Making sure the audio isn't clipping is one, second would be pop-filters. things can be changed in audio editing programs like audacity, even clipping can be minimized.

I'm not in the audio profession, but there are ways to make it louder through programs like audacity. There are plenty of tutorials out there for it. I'd say that the actual quality of the audio will be better if the recording software you use is properly configured the first go around. post-processing can only help so much.
