I have a pet theory that this game is not as influential as people think it is
Think of the best aspect of this game, the movement. How many games released in the past 10 years even give a shit beyond the basic functions to make the game work? Especially AAA games? Why the fuck hasn't a character action game ever incorporated the long jump? Not to mention, the 3D platformer genre itself is fucking dead, only Nintendo and the odd indie makes it now, and also most 3D platformers don't even try, like Banjo-Kazooie is great but the movement is fucking basic as hell compared to Mario

What do you feed it?
Do you walk it regularly?
ok, so AAA games are le super realistic, we are grown ups, movie games with le realistic movement instead. Who cares?
If it wasn't influential, you wouldn't be making a thread about it during off hours on a Mongolian basket weaving forum for schizophrenics trying to disect why everything it brought to the table isn't being utilized to its full potential 26 years later.
What pre-Mario 64 3D action games control as good then? It did a lot not just for plattformers specifically.
I've tried making a platformer. Spent a good year on movement and realized it's about 1000x harder than I thought. Then I found out that this is well-understood and not even AAA devs know how Nintendo programs such as good movement. It's a secret sauce that no one has managed to replicate.
This game invented the modern third person camera and "walking around the 3d environment with the analog stick" and 3d swimming other than modern 3d platforming.
>Alpha Waves
Alpha waves was truly obscure

Ok I didn't mention this in my post but what about the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, which is one of the only game series with movement on par with SM64
It was highly influential in a time where video games were actually respectable and weren't whored out by corporations that masqueraded them as movies. None of these dogshit ass movie games will be remembered after this industry implodes and the money goblins move on.
Well the SM64 code has been thoroughly decompiled and completely legal to look at, so maybe that will change
only Americans jizz over Mario 64
Sonic Adventure 1/2 have more threads and more internet videos yet nobody seriously claims they are more influential, just that there is more to discuss because the standing narrative is more complex than "uh yeah it's good and did xyz first"
seriously it's fucking ridiculous how many sonic adventure 2 videos are on youtube, even released recently
This video covers your question. It took tremendous work to get Tony Hawk to play as well as it does. At least half of development time.

It's not really the state of the art anymore; Mario Odyssey is.
Odyssey just has more moves, 64 obviously has better momentum physics

You were supposed to change the copypasta you fucking retard. You cretin. You can't even shitpost correctly, I can't imagine how much you've fucked up your real life.
That's because autistic people want to have sex with the hedgehogs.
It's a bit unfair to use Sonic as an example.
That's like saying Pokemon and Undertale get too much discussion. It's a fanbase of autistic degenerates and children, talking about (product) and themselves are all they know how to do to pass the time.
Sonic Adventure always was and always will be ass, no idea why people are jumping on it now
You might be right about that. Nintendo has been moving away from precision physics to make its platforming less punishing and more forgiving. Same with enemy hitboxes etc.

being ignorant is okay, you're born ignorant, and you're probably like 8 years old so don't worry about it
i'd say "you had to be there" but really you can just compare it to its contemporaries that were out immediately before it, and then a year after it, and see all that it changed and defined
developers don't shy away from having called it their inspiration
Read the final word, you cruton.
