You need annoying mechanics to make other parts of your game shine brighter just like songmakers learned that putting shitty raps between verses makes people listen to their song more hoping to listen to more good parts.
Mmmmmmmmmmm weapon durability.
Carrying weight instead of an actual inventory management system
Random encounters.
Forced Stealth Sections in non-stealth games.
Underwater sections with breath bar
timers of any kind
name 5 games that does this
Breakable weapons
If I was going to make a rap song I'd just make a rap song. No need to inject unnecessary stuff that would dilute your creative vision
Dark Souls (Bed of chaos)
Zelda Ocarina (Water Temple)
GTA franchise (terrible slow missions)
Assassin Creed (following missions)
Half Life (slow gravity on the other planet)
Nine times out of ten, games just shouldn't have limited inventories at all. It's only at all relevant if the game is going to strictly limit you to one or two items at a time. If you can carry twenty guns, just let me have all of the guns at that point. What difference does it make? We're already beyond the bounds of believability.
item durability!
accuracy and damage penalties when the enemy is a higher level than you.
unskippable cutscenes
Rubber banding AI in racing games
Gonna say....BALLS
Item durability is the top answer for sure. Everyone who defends item durability does it solely because they want to defend the developer's vision, not because they actually like it
I'm of the opinion that limiting inventory is a legitimate way to make your game more difficult, as long as you're intelligent about it and don't just use carry weight as a band-aid.
Crafting / upgrading failure chance
It makes you do inventory management, dragging out the game length
Boss fights. too videogamey.
