i honestly feel early game stalker is an actually straight up shit game with horrendous shooting and no good atmoshpere, but once you get to mid-late game areas it gets so much better. specially when there aren't bandits every 5 centimers
installing ZRPs and adding some stuff like weapon repair NPCs helps a lot

Almost no one who is a fan of these games recommends playing them without some sort of mod. Even if it's just bug fixes and stability improvements.
