I haven't played any Pokemon game since USUM but I've always played as the female since Gen 3 because the girls are attractive. I still remember my brother and I getting Ruby and Sapphire when we were kids and seeing May for the first time and metaphorically cooming at how hot she is. I didn't play as the female in Crystal because honestly, she's not that cute and the female in HGSS is better but still not quite there. I feel like they deliberately design the girls to be hot to appeal to horny teenage boys. I'm not the self-insert type so playing as a girl has never bothered me.
