He was useful character early on before the party met bacon, he is generally used as a character who knows about stuff to inform the party / viewer about if its not something Yuri would know or if no villain is around to explain it. A lot of the party members just kind of are there though, which is like the worst part about its cast.
Koudelka is good, Shadow Hearts 1 is just straight up bad and Shadow Hearts 2 is great.
