basic make the chimp brain happy stuff

the capacity and process of playing minecraft & mmos is also very appeasing to those on the spectrum so if it isn't just social anxiety stopping them it's a lot easier to receive joy from the game without the human element
I'd also argue that all games have elements associated/stimulating for autistic behavior, but these two were popular so they got the academics to pay attention

Sure. And there are also people who enjoy Sonic games and aren't either creeps or autists.
That is not the point.
The point is that these games do attract autists. That is absolutely not to say they can't be enjoyed by other people. Being of particular appeal to autists does not mean ONLY autists play them. Just that they form a very significant community. In Wow, you would not know about them, as they tend to be anti-social, they literally do not stand out most of the time.

Yet the appeal is significant and unique enough for it to be explored - alongside with minecraft - them as tools of potential therapeutic significance, because it is theoretically possible to use it to establish shared experience and form of communication. Which if you ever dealt with real autistic people, is often a major problem.
There are studies suggesting that using these specific games as a means to actually understand your autistic children, and form a more functional communication channel, may equally or more efficient than things like animal therapy.

Autistic basically means in-depth, unpolished and complex nowadays, doesn't it.
